Why gaining permission is important

Before implementing an email marketing campaign, you need to have a list of recipients who have given permission for you to contact them. This means that they expect and want to be contacted by your company about the services or products on offer. It is considered spamming if you acquire the email addresses off a third party, the internet or if you have their email address from a purchase they made over two years ago.

Ways to gain permission

Website Link

Have a facility on your website so customers can subscribe to regular emails informing them about your products, services and offers. Putting an ‘opt-in’ to email marketing option at the end of other forms would also increase your agreed permission list.

Purchase permission

Permission to be contacted is given when a customer purchases a product or service from your company. This could be made clearer with an ‘opt-in’ option at the purchasing stage.

Offers and competitions

Entice customers to apply to your email marketing by offering prizes and special offers to subscribers. The exclusive offers will entice more customers to join.

Add ‘opt-in’ boxes to website

Place the option to join the mailing list on your website so when customers are viewing it they can easily sign up. It could be placed in the same place on every page, such as the panel bar or on the ‘contact us’ page.

Partner with other websites

Join your site to others with complimentary goods. This will attract further customers who will be interested in your products and may sign up to your mailing list.

Ask a friend

Put a link in the newsletter and on the website so that subscribers can inform their friends about products or services they like, growing your mailing list.
